Canberran’s - let’s buy local. The array of wines in our small region is enormous. From your classic Shiraz and Riesling to a rare Gruner Veltliner - there is a lot on offer from wineries which are about 30 minutes down the road from the Canberra CBD.

As we all would know, many of the wineries in the region were heavily affected by the smoke from the tragic bushfires earlier this year. The smoke lines the skin of the grapes and becomes infused into the fruit when they start to ripen, ultimately tarnishing the wine when the wine making process begins. As a result, many Canberra wineries decided not to go ahead with a 2020 vintage. Clonakilla, Shaw Wines, and Lake George Winery are just a few of the wineries who copped a major financial loss as a result of the destruction of some of their crops.

On top of this, with the current circumstances, it is more important than ever to support our local wineries and take advantage of the huge array of products our region has to offer. There hasn’t been a more important time to support our small community and if it’s as small as buying a bottle of wine - why not!

At The Pop Inn we sell primarily local wines, with an occasional international wine on the menu to spice it up a bit! Our team love showcasing the talents of local wine makers and something, as a staff member, I am proud to sell.

In fact, the wineries in our small region are nationally and internationally recognised. James Halliday, an Australian wine writer and critic with over 50 years’ experience (now that’s a lot of wine!) publishes the Halliday Wine Companion every year and scores a variety of Australian wines. Let’s see how some our region’s wineries went last year:

·      Clonakilla’s 2016 Syrah 98/100

·      Clonakilla’s 2016 Shiraz Viognier 98/100

·      Eden Road Wines’ 2017 Canberra Riesling 95/100

·      Eden Road Wines’ 2017 Tumbarumba Chardonnay 95/100
